After years
of waiting Canadians are now able to get TiVo at a number of
Canada`s top electronic retail stores including Best Buy, Future
Shop, The Brick and London Drugs. However many Canadians are
concerned that once they purchase their TiVo systems that they will
not be able to configure the systems with their current digital TV
or Cable TV provider. That is simply not the case. TiVo charges a
monthly fee and works with virtually all cable and digital systems
in Canada and the United States. Prices for TiVo service in Canada
will be fairly affordable and start at only $8.31 per month for a 3
year prepaid plan.
Canadian Telivision providers such as Rogers, Cogeco, MTS, Shaw,
Novus, Bell, videotron and Eastlink Cable systems all seem to be
embracing the technology and are welcoming TiVo to Canada with open
arms. After all, enhancing the TV viewers experience is what service
providers aim to do. The concern over expanded TiVo distribution
comes from the cable channels themselves. The fear the channel
executives have is that with added usage of PVR systems and TiVo
systems, fewer and fewer people are actually viewing commercials.
For us as end consumers this is a great, time saving, life enhancing
thing but for cable companies, commercials are the baseline for
their revenues.
The effect could go full circle and actually impact the viewers
experience if PVR`s become widely used. The overall effect will look
something like this. Once advertisers realize commercial viewership
is dramatically down due to PVR systems, they will reduce the
advertising dollars that they put into TV ads. This reduction in
advertiser spending will have a direct affect on Station revenues.
Reduced revenues and lower profits for cable companies will reduce
the ability to produce high quality cutting edge shows. Without new
shows and increasing spending on TV shows, we the end consumer may
actually suffer by being left with nothing more than poor television
programming. So what do you do now- Buy a TiVo system and let the
market take its course.
